I just completed a nasty divorce and am now getting down to starting my own, home-based business. Starting out means doing some heavy research. Having practiced business law for over 25 years, I am ready to make a change. For these efforts, the promise of a residual income is a strong incentive. All of these spurred my research efforts. In sharing some of what I learned, I hope that it will help other women work at home with success.
Here are responses to the naysayers out there when I began talking about internet marketing:
First Negative Response: “All online network marketing is a scam.”
I say: Network marketing started in the 1940’s when Nutralite Products, Inc. began distributing its line of nutrition supplements. Amway soon duplicated their marketing approach for its home products. The industry has grown exponentially since then and continues to grow at rates that defy calculation. The U.S. network market is quickly approaching $20 Billion/year.
2. Naysayers #2: “All network marketing systems are pyramid schemes or Ponzi schemes.”
I say: A pyramid scheme is a skimming operation that has no actual value. No real goods or services are exchanged in a pyramid. The big fish at the top just eat the bottom fish. Ultimately the structure fails because it is top-heavy and oh yeah, by the way, it is illegal. Today there are about 20 network marketing companies listed on NASDAQ and they are subject to the increasing scrutiny of regulators. It may not be the best oversight given recent economic issues, but it is there. These opportunities would be foreclosed today given current trends if they were actually illegal or without value.
Conclusion: Every network marketing business opportunity is not a illegal pyramid. It is important to avoid stereotypes and look at the actual goods or services involved in a particular situation.
